Heritage of Sharing Emergency Assistance Helps Retired Pastor and His Wife With Escalating Healthcare Costs
Ordained to ministry in 1963, Rev. Donald Wheeler’s pastoral style was always a blend of the practical and the contemplative. He helped augment the labyrinth at First Baptist of Syracuse with a mediative pathway, a legacy of which he is particularly proud. “It is wonderful to take a few minutes during the day to walk and reflect,” comments Don.
In addition to his service at First Baptist of Syracuse, Don’s faith has also called him to serve at various other Baptist churches in Connecticut, West Virginia, and New York. In 2023, Don celebrated the 60th anniversary of his ordination at First Baptist of Manlius, New York.
Don, now 95 years old, and his wife Carol are retired, living on Social Security payments and an MMBB annuity of approximately $700 per month. Inflation, escalating prices, and longevity have made living on this fixed income increasingly challenging.
Despite living prudently, expenses can at times exceed their immediately available resources. Carol has had numerous orthopedic procedures, while Don has needed vascular surgery on one leg. With recent copayments of more than $170, Don has turned to MMBB for emergency financial assistance to supplement these and other escalating healthcare costs.
“I can’t believe how generous MMBB has been on our behalf,” explains Don. “We are so moved by others’ willingness to help.”
